Vuls finish in 13th place at Turlock golf tourney

After a final round 320, the University of Hawaii at Hilo finished 13th at the 42nd annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational on the Turlock Golf &Country Club in California.

The Vulcans turned in a 297 in round one and 318 in round two to finish with a 54-hole total of 935.

Cal State Monterey Bay won the team title with an 880. CSUMB’s Anton Rosen was the medalist with a 213.

Dalen Yamauchi led the Vulcans with a 12-over-par 228 to finish tied for 20th place. The senior had rounds of 72-78-78.

Finishing tied for 51st place was UHH’s James Coon with a 234 (75-78-81). Also in the field were Vuls Conner Graves (T60, 75-80-81—236), Kyeton Littel (T65, 75-82-80—237) and David Tottori(94th, 84-89-78—260).

HIGA golf tournament April 26 at Hilo Muni

Hawaii Island Golf Association (HIGA)/Hilo Muni Golf Club will hold a six-person team tournament Sunday, April 26, at Hilo Municipal Golf course.

All eligible players must be HIGA members and must have their HIGA handicap index

Nobu Yamauchi golf memorial tournament

The Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at 7 a.m. Thursday, June 11 at Hilo Muni.

Entry fee is $125 and includes green fee, cart, par three closest to the pin, team prizes, and lunch at Kim’s at the Hilo Muni.

Funds raised will be used for the Nobu Yamauchi RBI travel teams, RBI youth league teams, and partial scholarship for RBI players who will be attending college. One male and one female scholarship will be given.

Roy Fujimoto annual scholarships deadline

Applications are being accepted for the 13th annual Roy Fujimoto Senior Scholarships.

The scholarships, sponsored by KTA Super Stores and the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, will go to four graduating seniors in recognition of their BIIF athletic accomplishments, academic record and community service. An independent committee will select each of the recipients, who will receive $1,500 college scholarships. Recipients can use the funds to offset the cost of tuition, books, and room and board expenses.

Eligibility

The selection committee will consider current high school seniors who will attend a college/university in the fall. The student/athletes must attend a BIIF high school and participate in BIIF sports.

Qualities considered

• Athletic achievement, which shall include contributions to the team; versatility in BIIF sports; sportsmanship and dedication; and character and behavior, on and off the field.

• Academic record, which shall include grade point average throughout high school, high school course load and SAT/ACT scores.

• Community service, which shall include school activities outside of athletics and involvement in the Big Island community.

Nominations

The selection committee will only accept official BIIF senior scholarship nomination forms.

Students must submit the following items:

• A typed nomination form signed by the student’s school principal and athletic director

• An official transcript and SAT/ACT scores

• A personal statement no longer than 200 words.

• Letters of reference (two maximum)

• A photograph (preferably a head-and-shoulder senior portrait)

The selection committee will not accept stapled or incomplete applications.

Students may include supporting material on six one-sided sheets (81/2 inches by 11 inches) of paper. Enclose all materials, including nomination forms, personal statements, letters of reference and photographs in one package.

Students must submit complete applications (find mailing address on nomination form) by 5 p.m. April 29.

The selection committee will not accept materials submitted via facsimile transmission or applications received after April 29.

Applications are available in each BIIF school’s athletic director’s office.

Application deadline is Monday, April 27.
